For an arrestee to be released from jail, they or their loved one must pay the bail bonding company the premium cost of the bond: 10 percent in the state of California, according to Inessa Chavez, vice president of All American Bail Bonds in Santa Clarita.
“For example, if your loved one is being held on $5,000 bail, you would pay $500– 10 percent –to the bail agent,” she explained.
To help guarantee the person makes all of their court appearances, collateral such as the deed to a house or the pink slip to a car may also be required.
“Collateral is returned when the entire premium is paid and all court appearances are made,” Chavez said.

Those purchasing bail bonds in Santa Clarita– called the indemnitors –may also be required to reimburse their bail agent for excess travel expenses, long-distance phone calls and posting fees. In addition, defendants are responsible for their own attorney fees and court costs.
In the case that the defendant fails to arrive in court, the indemnitor is also responsible for skip tracer/bounty agent expenses to locate the person, as well as the cost of the entire bond amount.
“Skip tracing can run anywhere from $100 to $200 per hour,” Chavez said. “The more help the indemnitor provides in locating the defendant– now a fugitive –the less it will cost in the end.”
