Motorcycle safety is the latest topic discussed by Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff Station Deputy Rob Aldrete on KHTS AM-1220’s “Santa Clarita Sheriff Talk,” sponsored by All American Bail Bonds in Santa Clarita.
Aldrete emphasizes how large of an issue speeding is when it comes to handling motorcycle crashes
“The thing I see is speed– speed and not paying attention,” he said. “You just got to be courteous to each other and share the road and follow the speed limit. No. 1 I have to stress that. Speed kills.”
Aldrete explains that the leather material motorcyclists are known for wearing keeps their bodies safe from potential accidents, stating “There’s an old saying, ‘You’ve got to dress for the slide, not the ride’… Leather is protective also, as well as looking cool.”
Clashing with the myth that full-faced helmets impair a rider’s visibility of the road, Aldrete assured that they are actually beneficial because of the inevitability of potential head trauma in motorcycle crashes.
“If you crash, your head will hit the ground — it just happens — and a full-faced helmet being worn properly will save nose injuries, face injuries. You’re well protected,” explained Aldrete.
According to Aldrete, “Motorcycle riding is a perishable skill. You’ve got to keep it up.”
“The main thing on a motorcycle is to control that bike. Don’t let the bike control you, you control that bike,” he said.
In order for a rider to hone his or her skills, there are several classes available that teach the basics of motorcycle riding and how to control the bike.
Sometimes drivers will be distracted and may not always see a motorcycle on the road, so Aldrete provided motorists with tips on how to remain safe:
“Drive with your bright lights on. Don’t drive in a blind spot,” he said. “Have a way out. Don’t have vehicles to your left or to your right. Stay in the wheel track away from the car that’s next to you so you have some flexibility to move in an emergency, to swerve out of the way.”
