While you’re making News Year’s resolutions and may have had a little too many of your best friend’s jello shots, remember to drive safety and to never drive drunk.
It’s News Year’s Eve and you’ve has a few too many to drink and want to go home.
You stumble to your car, pull out your keys and begin driving but never make it home because you ran a red light and was hit by a car twice the size of yours.
New Years Eve is one of the biggest drinking holidays of the year, coming up second against July 4.
“There are numerous options available whether it be a taxi, Uber or a sober friend or family member,” said Deputy Josh Dubin with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station. “Always use a sober driver.”
The AAA Foundation officials took a look into the number of people killed annually in drunk driving-related incidents, according to a CNN report. They found that New Year’s Day had the highest number of deaths in one day.
“New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day are our busiest days of the year,” said Inessa Chavez, vice president of All American Bail Bonds in Santa Clarita. “We are planning to have agents ready to bail out your loved ones.”
From 2005-2009, an average of 130 people were killed each year on New Year’s Day, according to the CNN report. New Year’s Day is the most deadly day to be a pedestrian. A 2005 article found that 58 percent of pedestrians killed had alcohol in their system.
“We want everyone in our community to be safe this holiday season,” Chavez said. “Everyone should be able to enjoy the holiday and not have to worry about being injured or even killed because of a drunk driver.”
Officials are warning party-goers that while it is smart to use taxi services, such as Uber, the taxi rates often skyrocket during peak times.
Uber officials are expecting to service 2 million people worldwide on New Year’s Eve, according to a CNN Money report.
New Year’s Eve 2014 was one of the company’s busiest days, according to an Uber spokeswoman.
“The best thing to do is to know your limit and designate a sober driver,” Chavez said. “You’re loved ones will probably more than happy to pick you up from a party instead of finding you in a hospital.”
