The bail bonds business has had many ups and downs over the past 10 years with the economy, officials said.
Several factors have attributed to the way the business has profited and has suffered.
The Great Recession began in early 2007 and many say it ended around mid-2009.
“Bail bonds agents have had some good years and some bad ones, too,” said Jeff Chavez, vice president of All American Bail Bonds in Santa Clarita. “We had to turn away clients during the recession because they could not provide the collateral that we needed.
Along with paying a bail bond, bail agents usually request collateral which can be a house deed or a car pink slip — something of value to keep the defendant from fleeing while out on bail.
“After the recession and in more recent years, our business, All American Bail Bonds in Santa Clarita, has prospered,” Chavez said. “We try to help about 100 clients a month.”
While many say the economy is on the up, other factors have caused some bumps for the bail bonds business.
“With the passing of Proposition 47, I have seen a 25 percent decrease in the number of clients we serve,” Chavez said. “That’s one-fourth of our business gone.”
Proposition 47 was implemented in the Nov. 2014 elected and criminal offenders who commit certain nonserious and nonviolent drug and property crimes would be sentenced to reduced penalties, according to the California Voter Guide. State savings resulting from the measure will be used to support school truancy and dropout prevention, victim services, mental health and drug abuse treatment, and other programs designed to keep offenders out of prison and jail.
Sixty-four percent of California voters approved the law.
“For now, we will keep moving forward at All American Bail Bonds in Santa Clarita,” Chavez said. “We will keep evolving with our economy and our community.”
