Many of us have seen arrests on the television but arrests can be much different in the real world.
“Arrests are definitely not as glamorous as Hollywood portrays them to be,” said Inessa Chavez, vice president of All American Bail Bonds in Santa Clarita. “Our law enforcement officers have several steps to through.”\
After an arrest is made in the state of California, the detainee is moved to a law enforcement station, such as the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station, for booking and processing.
“The booking process can take a short amount of time or a long amount of time depending on where the arrest was made and where the person is being booked,” Chavez said, adding that All American Bail Bonds in Santa Clarita has several locations in California.
A smaller station, like the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station, can take an hour to process while a larger jail such as Men’s Central Jail can take up to 12 hours.
During the booking process, law enforcement officials search the suspect for weapons and drugs. Their belongings will then be cataloged and stored.
Fingerprinting, a background check, checking for warrants and computer processing are all part of the booking process.
Many detainees then call bail bonds agencies, like All American Bail Bonds in Santa Clarita, or their family.
“We try to ge the defendant out of jail as soon as possible so they can be with their family,” Chavez said. “We often work day and night to make sure the defendant is free.”
The process continues into the court system where the bail will be set at the preliminary hearing.
